Hosting guests in Greenpoint, Brooklyn is the remarkable evolution of my many years traveling around our world.
Memories, as most life on earth, live best when watered, so stories are told giving breath to the chronology of life’s road. And so, it is with pleasure that I introduce you to Millie.
Mildred “Millie” Barbarite was a feisty Italian whose parents emigrated from Calabria to settle in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in the late 19th century. Born in Greenpoint, she was a jewel of a woman who was whip-smart, industrious and open minded miles ahead of the social confines of her generation.
At 13, she began working at the Lord and Taylor department store in Manhattan, where she never missed a day in over sixty years, even if it meant walking across a frozen East River to get there. Never one for marriage, she enjoyed travel, gardening, fashion and as one of 11 children, she was devoted to her family and her friends.
In the sunset years of her life, her eyesight began to fail and was in need of daily assistance. It was then that my friend Olena introduced us and life took a turn; I spent every day with Millie at Clifford Place where she had lived for her then 90 years offering the assistance she needed and reminiscing, enjoying life and laughing. A lot.
By the time my husband Geoff and I moved into one of the house‘s apartments a few years later, we were part of each others family. When Millie passed at 97, her family generously held the house for my consideration. It was and is an honor to be the newest owner of the house Millie so well cared for.
Our Townhouse in Greenpoint
The house, a wonderfully historic remnant of Greenpoint’s first farm has been an oasis for me and my husband for 19 years. Five years ago, I decided it was time to share its life with guests and started Brooklyn Holiday Apartments.
Having traveled the world over [which I will post about in subsequent blogs] I have a honed sense of what it means to have a comfortable, private, well-located and hospitable holiday space and aspire to welcome and provide all my guests with a memorable and enjoyable stay. In our three apartments, I have been fortunate to welcome hundreds of amazing guests from the world over, some of whom have returned year after year to use our townhouses as a home-away-from-home.
In the last decade, Brooklyn has become a hot spot of international trends, an artist mecca and an urban discoverer’s magnet. Our quiet corner in Greenpoint blends the old world and new in a sophisticated mash-up of history and pop-up shops, exquisite restaurants, geography, boutiques, bars and parks.
We look forward to hosting your New York vacation in our townhouse apartments in Greenpoint. Millie says, “Hello”.
